Indoor cycling is what we do.
ICI trains indoor cycling instructors, supports their continued development and works to improve the knowledge and professional practice behind indoor cycling instruction.
Indoor cycling looks simple from outside the studio. Get on a bike, turn up the resistance and pedal.
Teaching it well involves rather more: exercise and training principles, bike setup and technique, session design, communication, judgement, safety and an understanding of the people taking part.
ICI specialises in indoor cycling. We provide instructor training, continuing professional development, professional standards, guidance and knowledge specifically for indoor cycling instructors.
Training is part of it
ICI works across the different stages of instructor practice, from somebody preparing to teach their first class to experienced instructors continuing to develop.
Train
Train new indoor cycling instructors and provide routes for existing instructors who want to update or strengthen their training.
ICI Training →Develop
Continuing professional development in session design, coaching, power, music, inclusive fitness and professional practice.
ICI Develop →Share knowledge
Research, practical guidance, current developments and maintained reference information for the indoor cycling community.
ICI Knowledge →Set standards
Define what good professional practice looks like and give instructors a framework for development beyond initial certification.
Professional standards →Certification is the beginning
The ICI professional framework connects initial training with the standards, development and professional responsibility that follow it.
Two different things
A certificate records the training and assessment somebody successfully completed. Current professional status tells you something about where they are now. We don't pretend they're the same thing.
Your certification doesn't expire
When an instructor successfully completes their ICI instructor training and assessment, that achievement remains theirs.
We don't make somebody repeatedly buy the same course simply to keep the certificate alive.
Professional status can change
Membership, continuing development and other current professional information can change over time.
That's why the ICI register distinguishes completed training and certification from an instructor's current professional status.
What should an indoor cycling instructor know and do?
Training makes more sense when there is a clear idea of the standard it is trying to produce. ICI's professional standards provide that reference point.
Standards need maintaining, not just writing down
ICI has quality-assurance processes covering training, assessment, tutors, learner feedback and the continued review of what we teach.
Useful where it matters
Some instructors, employers and professional bodies need formal recognition or continuing education information.
We make that information easy to find where it applies, without allowing somebody else's logo to become the reason ICI exists.
Training still comes down to people
ICI courses and assessments are supported by tutors with indoor cycling knowledge and practical instructor experience.
